Tutoring Information

I use a combination of my own course materials, a wide range of 11+ workbooks and past exam papers. Here, children are thoroughly tutored in small, single-gender groups and prepared for their examinations, taking them to a higher level to ensure they have the greatest opportunity for success and entry into Grammar School.

Eight 11+ Classes per week will run after school hours lasting 75 minutes each. These are divided across the Autumn, Spring and Summer terms, and include sessions during the half term break. Additional small group sessions run during August to cover any weaknesses identified through assessments and reduce skill loss during the long summer break. These are subject to booking and extra cost.

Classes

Eight 11+ Classes per week will run after school hours lasting 75 minutes each. These are divided across the Autumn, Spring and Summer terms with 14 sessions planned for each term.

Classes consist of small single-gender groups.  All groups sessions take place at The Oreston Centre, Plymouth. Exam techniques and timed sessions are included in the 11+ programme of study to create an exam ‘atmosphere’.

Most children prefer working within a small group. Working within small single-gendered groups enables teaching to focus on the different testing requirements set by the local grammar schools. Such groups allow children to increase their focus and confidence as well as share and enjoy their learning.

They are able to benefit from times of concentrated and sustained silent work, as well as being able to interact with their peers. This is also an ideal opportunity to make those early friendships with children from other schools and so can help ease the transition to secondary school.

Parents are able to select sessions from a pre-determined teaching timetable but are required to commit to their chosen regular slot. Children’s progress will be reviewed each term and reported to parents; here discussions regarding ongoing tuition can be had with parents. If a child is deemed unlikely to pass the 11+ Examination, this will be communicated by the Spring term.

Spring Presentation

This is held each spring and is offered to prospective parents. Details about the 11+ preparation process, expectations and timeline of events is shared. If you would like to attend, please drop a text to Nicky on 07725 868767. The next presentation will be held on Saturday 25th April -10am – at The Oreston Centre.

Interim Assessments

Interim assessments in the Autumn, Spring and Summer terms familiarise children with the style of the 11+ Examination and enable progress to be tracked. This also provides an opportunity to identify individual weaknesses so that understanding and skills can be developed. Parents are informed during these terms on how their child is progressing through the course. Information shared will enable parents to make an informed decision regarding ongoing tuition.

Lesson Structure and Content

single-gender groups ensure that each child receives the individual attention and support that they need. Lessons focus on Maths and English with regular ‘Make it Real’ questions from past papers featuring in weekly sessions. Children are also tutored in exam techniques, allowing them to become familiar with the expectation of the examinations. Tuition is designed to build knowledge, skills and confidence.

Homework

This is set each week and a commitment to it by children and their parents is an important aspect of 11+ preparation.
