Why might I need to engage a private tutor?
A private tutor can prove to be a sound investment in your child’s education. Tutoring is personalised and addresses the specific needs of the learner; whether they are finding particular aspects of the school curriculum challenging, if they need greater challenges than class-based teaching can provide or if they need to prepare for something specific like an 11+ Examination.
Are all sessions 1:1?
1:1 sessions – are offered where the child has the undivided attention of the tutor. These address the individual needs of the learner and teaching is personalised for children according to requirement, pace and capability.

11+ Sessions – these are offered in small groups of six and are for children who are coping well at school and so don’t need the tutor’s sole attention.

Where does the tutoring take place?

All tutoring takes place in the Tutor Room at Mrs B-R’s Tutor Station in Oreston, Plymouth.

Is parking available?
Yes! Use of the on-site parking is available and encouraged. Parents can drop-off and collect without leaving the car! Parents are welcome to stay on site during sessions.
How much is tutoring?

1:1 sessions – charged at £30 per hour to include all prior planning and teaching materials. Sessions can be paid weekly or monthly in advance.

11+ Sessions – charged at £22 for 75 minutes. The syllabus is delivered over three school terms. Payments are spread across 11 months at £82.00 per month, payable in advance. (Please note that, due to copyright, parents will need to purchase two GL Assessment packs at approx £12 each at the start of the course- Mrs B-R’s Tutor Station can arrange this for you).

Online payments are preferred.

Do I have to pay for missed sessions?
1:1 sessions – are charged at half rate providing 24 hours notice of cancellation is provided. Less notice will require full payment as short notice cancellations cannot be filled by other pupils.

11+ Sessions – arrangements can sometimes be made for a child to join an alternative group in the course of the week. Missed sessions are not refunded.

Are discounts offered for multiple family members or cash?
Sadly not. Mrs B-R’s Tutor Station is a small business and as such is liable to business taxes as well as employee PAYE.
Will my child have homework?
It’s up to you!

1:1 – homework can be set if this is something you would like but there are no consequences for tasks that are not completed.

11+ – expect between 1-2 hours of homework each week to enable children to practice skills taught and to practice timed writing/reading/maths tasks as well as 11+ style papers. Again there are no consequences; if your child is motivated to pass the 11+ they will complete the tasks.

What happens if I want to stop private tutoring?
1:1 – we can stop whenever you like with no further financial commitement other than for sessions delivered.

11+ Sessions – a pupil can leave the course at any point. However, refunds will not be given for sessions remaining in any given calendar month. All future monthly payments must be quickly cancelled by the payee to avoid over-payment and the need to arrange a refund.

What about safeguarding?
Mrs Barron-Robinson holds Enhanced DBS clearance – a copy of which will be shown to parents at the first meeting. Proof of qualification and public liability insurance will also be provided.
